The City of Altus is well known for its extensive support of Altus AFB. In fact, the Altus Trophy, presented to the outstanding base in the Air Education and Training Command, is inspired by their many years of close partnership. But the City is not sitting on its laurels in today’s atmosphere of military mission transformation and relocation.
In 2026 the City was awarded a new grant through the Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation (OLDCC) Installation Readiness (IR) program. This grant is funding site design for a new 40MW natural gas power generation plant, and ensuring that the site is capable of also supporting a future Small Modular Reactor. In addition, the project involves completion of design of an electric energy intertie between the City of Altus power grid and Altus AFB. This new intertie will provide Altus AFB with a redundant source of energy in support of mission readiness and warfighting capability.
SONRI’s role in this project:

The Altus AFB Readiness Project will contribute substantially to mission assurance for Altus AFB. In addition, it will support the development of new energy generation resources in a region of Oklahoma that is, quite literally, at the end of the transmission line from other sources, and thus vulnerable to loss of service. New energy generation will also provide the City of Altus with expanded revenue from sales of excess energy not required by the City or Altus AFB. SONRI is proud of our role this project!
